Rather than buy each other traditional gifts for Christmas this past year, Daniel and I “gifted” each other an experience: a western Caribbean cruise! We had the best time and got to see some beautiful new places together. I agree with what Daniel said at one point — a cruise is a great way to get a little taste of each port for future trips, like a destination sampler 🙂
Where we went:
- Grand Cayman
- Costa Maya
- Cozumel
Cruise tip: If you’re a Costco member you can save money on your vacation by booking through Costco Travel versus booking directly through the cruise line.
Excursion & Activity Recommendations:
- Grand Cayman: Take a jet-ski out to Stingray City (a huge sandbar where you’ll get to hold, feed and swim with stingrays), and Starfish Beach. We booked this excursion through Costco as well and it was cheaper than booking through the cruise line.
- Costa Maya: Take the $4 shuttle from the cruise port to Mahahaul beach. It’s only a five minute ride and there’s access to a beautiful, free beach. Chill in your chair and soak in the views or explore the shops up and down the paved walkway. There’s plenty of taxis in this area, so don’t worry about not being able to find a way back to the port.
- Cozumel: Rent a moped and scoot around the island! This was my favorite activity of our whole trip and a great way to see the island. There are moped vendors right outside the port area, so no need to book an excursion beforehand. Also, visit Playa Uvas. For $15 per person you get to experience the whole resort, snorkel with a snorkel guide (there’s an amazing coral reef right off the shore!), rent a kayak for 30 minutes and get a free drink. This beach resort was not crowded at all and absolutely breathtaking!
